The Treatment Intervention Inventory (TII) is an adult (male & female) assessment instrument or test. The TII is an intake screening or outpatient test that is used in a variety of chemical, counseling probation and treatment settings. It is a computer scored test that can be administered and scored on-site. From data (answers) input, TIIs are scored with their 3-page reports printed within 3 minutes. At one sitting of approximately 30 minutes duration, staff can acquire a vast amount of helpful information. Use of the TII facilitates early problem identification and timely intervention, which improves treatment outcomes. The Treatment Intervention Inventory (TII) contains nine scales (domains).
Two different TII testing systems: 1. On Windows diskettes or USB flash drives: (www.bdsltd.com), or 2. Online or over the internet testing: (www.online-testing.com).
The Treatment Intervention Inventory (TII) research is reported in the document titled “TII: Inventory of Scientific Findings.” Other TII research is reported from Behavior Data Systems, Ltd. (BDS) website www.BDS-Research.com. That said, the TII is a reliable, valid and accurate evidence based assessment instrument or test.

Reference to the above table shows that a problem is not identified until a scale score is at or above the 70th percentile problem threshold. This procedure is fair and avoids extremes such as over-identification or under-identification of problems. Risk ranges were initially obtained from the research literature and subsequently substantiated in TII research (www.BDS-Research.com).
With a screening system, budgetary savings (dollars) would be large with no compromises in clients receiving appropriate assessment and treatment services. Indeed, more clients would receive help. Without a screening system, there is more risk of over or under-utilization of treatment services.
Treatment Intervention Inventory (TII) reports are printed on-site within 2½ minutes of data (answers) entry. TII reports summarize the client’s self-report history, explain what each scale’s attained score means and offer specific score-related recommendations. In addition, significant items (direct admissions or unusual answers) are highlighted. Emphasis is placed on having meaningful reports that are helpful and easily understood. The Example Report link at the top of the page presents an example TII report.
Treatment Intervention Inventory (TII) reliability, validity and accuracy research are reported in the document titled “TII: Inventory of Scientific Findings,” which is available by clicking on the TII Research link at the top of this page. TII research is presented in a cumulative database format with the most recent research at the end of the report. TII scales have impressive evidence based reliability, validity and accuracy.
An example of TII internal consistencies (coefficient alphas) is reported in the following table.

All TII scales are highly reliable, and are well above the professionally accepted standard of .75. Early TII research involved other tests that reportedly measured the same constructs. In the 2011 study reported above, all alpha reliability coefficients for all TII scales were at or above 0.87. These results demonstrate that the TII is a reliable assessment instrument or test for risk and needs screening.
TII scale validity was studied in terms of community service and outpatient clients' problem admissions (direct admission, problem-related arrest or treatment history) and elevated (70th percentile and higher) or problematic scale scores. The percentage of participants having both a “problem admission” and an “elevated” scale score was calculated for TII scales having both admission and scale scores. Correct identification of problems are reported as correct identification percentages. Alcohol Scale (100%); Drugs Scale (100%); Anxiety Scale (98%); Depression Scale (98.1%); Distress Scale (94.7%); Family Issues Scale (99.4%). For more comprehensive TII research refer to www.BDS-Research.com.
In summary, all nine (9) Treatment Intervention Inventory (TII) scales are highly reliable. And, predictive validity research demonstrates that TII scale correctly identify problematic clients. The TII is an evidence based test that can help in client risk and needs problem identification.
The TII Truthfulness Scale identifies denial, problem minimization and attempts to fake good. Most contemporary assessors, evaluators and researchers agree that a Truthfulness Scale is a very important component in contemporary tests. Click on the Truthfulness Scales link at the top of this page for more information. The TII’s Truthfulness Scale has been validated with the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), polygraph exams, other tests, truthfulness research and experienced staff judgment. The TII’s Truthfulness Scale has been demonstrated to be reliable, valid and accurate. The TII Truthfulness Scale’s development was influenced by the MMPI’s L-scale and F-scales.
Truth-corrected scores have been proven to be important for assessment accuracy. The TII’s truth correction process is comparable to the MMPI’s F and K-scale correction. The proprietary Truth-Correction equation converts raw scores to Truth-Corrected scores. Truth-Corrected scores are more accurate than raw scores. Raw scores reflect what the client wants you to know. Truth-Corrected scores reveal what the client is attempting to hide.
Reading impaired client’s represent 20+ percent of clients tested. This represents a serious problem for other tests. Behavior Data Systems, Ltd. (BDS) and its subsidiary, Professional Online Testing Solutions, Inc. (Online Testing) have developed an innovative alternative for dealing with this problem. It is called Human Voice Audio.
Human Voice Audio involved the programs' software, which is provided free to test users. It requires a computer, earphones and simple up-down arrow key instructions. The TII is available in English and Spanish. Client’s passive vocabularies (what they hear and understand) are often greater than their active vocabularies (what they speak). Hearing things read out loud often reduces cultural and communication problems. Human Voice Audio is an alternative approach to screening reading impaired clients. It is provided free. BDS and Online Testing staff are available to assist Human Voice Audio users.
BDS, Risk & Needs and Online Testing encourage test users to delete client names from diskettes before they are returned to BDS. Client names are automatically encrypted when using Online Testing, to be permanently deleted by the test user. The Delete Names software program is provided free. Once a client’s name is removed or deleted they are gone and cannot be retrieved. Deleting client names does not delete demographics or test data, which is downloaded into the TII’s cumulative database for subsequent analysis and research. This proprietary deletion procedure involves a few keystrokes and insures client confidentiality and compliance with HIPAA (federal regulation 45 C.F.R. 164.501). It is the test user’s responsibility, when testing online or when using BDS diskettes or USB flash drives to delete client names.
Behavior Data Systems, Ltd. (BDS) staff is available to participate in TII training programs conducted by statewide departments and high volume testing agencies. Sometimes smaller volume providers get together for collective (multiple providers) on-site training. BDS typically participates in 6-hour training sessions. This training usually involves a hands-on computer scoring of reports. BDS gives training certificates to attendees attesting to their TII training.
Staff training is also provided on Fridays at BDS offices from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and as desired 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. These training sessions are free. To participate, contact BDS at least ten working days in advance.
BDS provides a full range of support services – free. These services include, but aren’t limited to, email, fax and telephone availability, telephone walk-through assistance, live chat, test consultation, staff training and free test upgrades. Support services are provided free. Other free test-related items and services are discussed on the Cost linked page at the top of this page.
The TII Training Manual explains how the TII works. Contents include installation, scale score descriptions, clarification of unique TII features and much more. TII Training Manuals are provided to TII test users free.
The TII test unit fee is presented on the Cost linked page at the top of this page. There is only the one cost or charge, and that is the test unit fee. Everything else is provided at no additional cost to the test user. This includes test booklets, answer sheets, training manuals, upgrades, ongoing research, summary reports, training and support services.
BDS’s one all-inclusive test unit fee is very affordable and doesn’t change. Your test unit fee, when you become a TII test user, does not change. If, for whatever reason the TII test unit fee is increased, it is only increased for new TII clients. This way you can rest assured that your test cost will not increase.
